STEEL BEAM INSTALLATION
Am-cat’s Team Structural will replace a basement Steal beam, which could cost anywhere from $6,500 to $25,000, but less complex jobs won’t cost more than $45,000. The Mechanical Plans will provide the exact measurements in itemizing the cost.
A New Steel Beam Installation should normally have at least 150mm bearing (overlapping onto the existing wall) on each side of the opening and the existing wall beneath the bearings are likely to need to be strengthened to prevent crushing them. The standard way of connecting beams to columns is to provide moment transfer through full penetration butt welds between the beam flanges and column flanges (strong axis connections) or continuity plates (weak axis connections) and to provide shear transfer through the beam web connection. Beams are allowed to be wider than the supporting columns as noted in ACI 318 – 21.5. 1.4, but beam width normally does not exceed the width of the column, for constructability. The spacing between individual beams depends on the applied loads that will be displayed on the mechanical drawings.
